An excellent tool for gauging workout intensity... Probably the closest thing we have to a broad indication of overall health - The Telegraph

Know when to train, how hard to train & when to rest in order to optimise health, fitness and athletic performance.

A 60 second measurement each morning will tell you how stressed, recovered and ready for training your body is. Using heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate and recovery enablers, such as stress, diet, sleep, and more, ithlete delivers a truly personalised training recommendation that anyone from a recreational runner to an Olympic athlete can use.

The many benefits of having this information (quite literally) at your fingertips include:
• Make the most of every training session
• Manage recovery
• Optimise fitness
• Enjoy guilt free rest days
• Avoid overtraining & injury
• Balance workouts and lifestyle demands
• Improve health, fitness and performance

Getting the right balance between training and recovery is a challenge, even for experienced athletes. Remove the need for guess work by using ithlete and base your training on an objective measure of fatigue and recovery. You will reap the benefits in fitness and performance.

HOW IT WORKS
Heart rate variability is a proven window into the body’s nervous system, going beyond a simple resting heart rate (RHR) measure. Training is all about stress and recovery and a hard session will lower your HRV score. By using ithlete to monitor training stress you can adjust sessions according to your body’s current readiness to train, improve and perform.
Simply take a 1-minute measurement every morning and follow the colour coded training recommendation: train as normal, train light or take a rest day. For more about heart rate variability see www.myithlete.com/what-is-hrv

PLEASE NOTE:
The ithlete HRV app requires additional hardware.

Users will need either an ithlete Finger Sensor OR a compatible analog or Bluetooth Smart HRM strap. These are all available from www.myithlete.com/products. Please see the website FAQs for a full list of compatible models and purchasing options.

Please also note that this HRV app is NOT a heart rate monitor app, which people use during exercise. The ithlete app is an app that uses heart rate variability to indicate your state of fatigue, recovery and readiness to train following a 1 minute morning measure, and it is not used during the actual exercise.

Pros and cons of ithlete Train.Recover.Perform app for iPhone and iPad

ithlete Train.Recover.Perform app good for

Great app ! Will receive 5 stars if: - integration into iOS 8 health center - automatic import and correlation to sleep quality data from apps like "sleep cycle" - automatic import/correlation with data from sports exercises apps like "runtastic" and the iPhones movements/step trackers Please improve your fantastic app to work together with all the other great health/fitness apps! Thanks
Does what it is supposed to. I also found a peer-reviewed paper comparing the ithlete app with a professional heart rate analysis machine and very good correlation was found. I use Polar H7, no problems. Could use better integration with the iOS Health, and for example use data from sleep analysis apps.
Reliable HR readings, almost no more annoying interrupts, iThlete Pro integration is the icing on the cake.
Appears to do what it claims, would be superb if the application could be expanded to become a fully fledged heart rate monitor thanks to the adaptor
I am an ironman triathlete and this app is fantastic . it really helps to know whether you should have heavy train session , light , or rest day
I have been competing at an international level for over 40 years. This App really will help you not overtrain and also shows you when you can really push yourself. I use a Bluetooth heart rate monitor to measure my HRV. Great App you must purchase if you dont want to have a massive failure in your health. Oscar Chalupsky 12X Molokai World Surfski Champion

Some bad moments

Funktioniert nicht mit dem Polar H7 BT smart Brustgurt - damit leider fürs iPhone5 ziemlich unbrauchbar! The App. doesnt work with the iPhone5 and the Polar H7 BT smart HR Belt! It doesnt recognize the HW;( So far a nice idea but pure wasted Money!
The app provides a misleading compatibility information regarding the heart rate sensors. It does not work with the Polar H7 sensor. For me it was and is a waste of money.
the potential for this device and app combination are incredible. that said, the app disappoints at preset. the data input screen is woefully inadequate, and doesnt allow for user customizable input. this greatly limits the usefulness of the data output for those of us who are elite athletes or coaches. worse still, the csv output files contain data that are garbled thanks to the way the app interprets punctuation in the comments. and why I training load entered on a separate screen from the rest of the data? terrible planning of the app and GUI in that sense, and poor planning for the logistics of the data component as well. this could easily be a 5-star app with some minimal planning and talent on the programming side. alas, at present it is not. come on ithlete! force me to upgrade my rating!!
Its really useful when it works, but youre lucky when the sensor works.
The app is good when it works. It should work with any Bluetooth smart heart monitor but doesnt. I had to get a new strap and it wont connect. Customer service is terrible. I contacted them, they were slow to respond and offered no help to resolve the issue. This renders the app useless now.
Bought the ithlete and accompanying chest strap and wireless receiver for a total of $85. I had high expectations based off the cost as well as the generally positive (though few in number) reviews on the App Store. Overall I have not been satisfied in the investment. The chest strap gives inconsistent readings at best, and often doesnt pick up a pulse at all. I still do not get consistent pulse or HRV readings, even after troubleshooting and contacting customer service and following their advice. If you really want to monitor HRV, you will have to invest more in a more established brand - ultimately, you get what you pay for, in this case wasted $85. I am currently seeking a refund.
